Writing a cover letter – structure, example and template

A strong cover letter is brief, specific and tailored. It should explain why your experience is relevant to this particular role.

A simple structure

Aim for three to five short paragraphs and about half to one page.

  • Opening: the role and why it interests you
  • Middle: two relevant examples with results
  • Closing: what you want to contribute and a clear next step

Example opening

'The Technical Project Manager role caught my interest because it combines continuous improvement, production and cross-functional leadership — areas where I have delivered measurable results.'

Avoid generic wording

Replace general words such as driven and outgoing with examples that show how you work. The letter should complement your CV, not repeat it line by line.
